alt.lab is an interdisciplinary collective for critical computing and design research. We ask when and where alternatives lie, how and by whom alternatives are enacted or foreclosed, and how we might build alternatives, altogether.

We study the labor, practices, and experiences of people and communities impacted by dominant sociotechnical systems and infrastructures. Situated in human-computer interaction, science and technology studies, and media studies, our work centers their expertise in imagining, designing, and using (non)technologies, while attending to and infrastructuring otherwise ways of knowing, relating, and becoming.
